Four days working as part of the team on a campaign shoot for The Australian Ballet, documenting the production behind the scenes alongside photographer Justin Ridler and then Artistic Director David McAllister AC. Four sets were built and photographed in the studio, with dancers, assistants and crew coming and going over the four days.

Every so often, a project comes along that resonates deeply. A recent commission with Orygen, the youth mental health organisation, led by Professor Patrick McGorry AO was one such project. The brief was to create an image library illustrating how devices affect young people’s wellbeing — a subtle but powerful insight into their daily lives. I’m familiar with the fragility of adolescence and the long-term impact of early experiences in these formative years. Orygen’s approach, thoughtful, compassionate, and evidence-based, was reflected in every portrait we created, capturing both vulnerability and resilience.

A background in teaching and performance proved the perfect complement to Head Sommelier Jay Bessell. Together with his loyal team, Jay runs a series of informative and entertaining classes at City Wine Shop, presenting the world of wine with a style that is engaging, approachable and refreshingly unpretentious.

Portraiture commissioned by Australia Post for their 2025 Annual Report. This assignment involved photographing the senior leadership team, with two sets prepared in advance so we could work quickly once the executives arrived. Most of the time went into composing the full team shot, a delicate balance of schedules, positioning, and patience. In situations like this, speed, efficiency, and decisiveness are essential. As much as I’d like to imagine I was the highlight of their day, my instincts suggest otherwise. The resulting portraits appear simple, but the time constraints and coordination behind them were anything but.

Since its inception in 1916, CSL has grown into a global biotech leader. It’s been fascinating to catch a glimpse of a world-leading operation over many years. From wearing PPE and proceeding through air lockers to record the laboratory technicians, to photographing its CEO and Executive Team, we’ve enjoyed every minute. Good inspiration for neat freaks too.

In 2014, The International Aids Council commissioned me for 5 days to cover the World AIDS conference in Melbourne. Speakers included Michael Kirby, Richard Branson and Bill Clinton amongst numerous top scientists and global experts in the medical field. The event was overshadowed by the downing of flight MH17, among the passengers were delegates en route to the 20th International AIDS Conference in Melbourne, including Joep Lange, a former president of the International AIDS Society, which organized the conference. Images from the public gathering at Federation Square mourning the loss of victims of MH17 were captured on an iPhone due to logistical issues and transmitted around the world.

I’ve retained a quiet admiration for the team at ONJCRI (Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute) since photographing them hard at work in their laboratories. Very few medical research institutes manage to balance the critical mix of scientists, doctors, students, patients and families, all collaborating to make a difference to cancer care.

As a teenager, I worked in factories intending to land an apprenticeship, but I became distracted by music, among other things. I found myself on the factory floor again when commissioned to create an image library for Fair Work Australia. Reliving my teenage experiences, I even managed to join the workers for smoko.
