Warriors

This series of portraits echoes the challenges faced by Western Australia’s indigenous communities. Marlon, pictured here with his brothers, experienced a challenging childhood and spent some time in jail. When I met him, Marlon was making considerable personal progress, focusing on regular and disciplined work in the gym. To me, he looked like a proud warrior, and I encouraged him to show his fine physique for the portraits. Not long after these photographs were taken, Marlon and a friend were refused admission onto a train for being intoxicated. He decided to run home along the train tracks and was tragically killed in a tunnel.
